Baltimore County Offering Free Replacement for Lead Water Service Lines: DEADLINE March 31st, 2026

by Ashira Barbosa

If you own a home in Baltimore County, there is an important program you may want to take advantage of.

Baltimore County is currently offering free replacement of water service lines that contain lead, but homeowners must complete a short self reporting survey before March 31, 2026 to qualify.

As part of a nationwide effort led by the EPA to identify and remove lead pipes, the Baltimore County Department of Public Works and Transportation is asking homeowners to check the water service line where it enters their home. The process is simple and only takes a few minutes. Homeowners will complete a quick scratch and magnet test and submit a photo through the survey.

If Baltimore County confirms that the water service line contains lead and needs replacement, the county will replace the line at no cost to the homeowner as part of its capital improvement program.

Early evidence suggests the likelihood of finding lead service lines in Baltimore County is low. However, the county encourages residents to participate so homeowners can have certainty about their property.

If you are a Baltimore County homeowner, it is worth taking a few minutes to check.
